  1. Midshipmin. It's totally gender neutral and close enough that any slips won't be noticed. Tell the recruits that it means they are the minimum requirement for the position.

  4. The real problem is those with 20 to 40 years of saying one thing, and hundreds of years of tradition behind that. It would make the most sense to use a word close enough that you don't get that awkward stumble and correction every time anyone tries to say the new rank for the next decade or two.
