Entremet Originally shared by Kam-Yung Soh "“Like most people in the US, I grew up knowing the words to this carol and even (shudder) singing them occasionally (singing is not a strong point of mine), but never really thought about what they meant, how the carol originated, or what birds were involved”, says Dr Rasmussen in email. So she decided to figure it out. Dr Rasmussen, who’s tied for third for the most bird discoveries in the world, is probably also the world’s foremost avian sleuth, due to her meticulous detective work a few years ago that uncovered the many ornithological thefts and records frauds in museums that were committed by eminent British ornithologist, Richard Meinertzhagen. But who would ever have thought that an old Christmas carol might also hold an avian mystery? “After all, it’s just a Christmas carol!” Dr Rasmussen points out." https://medium.com/@GrrlScientist/meet-the-real-birds-of-the-twelve-days-of-christmas-fame-grrlscientist-5a8bc09350c9
Have you been to a Belk lately? Disappointing to say the least. They still do retail 80's style.
ReplyDeleteThe whole "minor-league" department store is an anachronism these days. With the internet, Wal-mart, big-box stores and the homogenization of American retail, it's either sell-out or close. The days of smaller regional chains has faded. check out this list of stores and see if there are any that are familiar...

Where I grew up, Caldor's was the place to go when you wanted a whole bunch of stuff and didn't want to go to 30 places to get it. That ended with the 21st century.

It's not third-generation failure, It's an outdated business model that's been slowly dying for years. Belk is just another notch in the tightening belt of retail.
Well, actually, it's both changes in customer expectations, and management practices, at Belk's, anyway.
ReplyDeleteBelk's used to be a kinder, more stylish, and more Southern version of Sears.
You paid a bit more, but did not mind.
Traditional, but not too dated.
IMO, they began to lose their way in the 90's, alienating both old and new customers.
