“More than once I heard them say ‘He’s not like Charlie Felts. Charlie won’t swear on your back,’’ Gregory said.

What the moonshiners meant by that was simple: Felts wouldn’t lie on the stand and swear that he recognized an accused man if he couldn’t make them out clearly or if they were running away when he came upon a still.

“He did his job, told the truth and people respected him for it,” Gregory said. “Even people he sent to jail.”
