Beware The Gallinippers!

Image
Beware The Gallinippers! Psorophora ciliata was described in 1897 by naturalist David Flanery in the journal “Nature” as “…the shyest, slyest, meanest and most venomous of them all.” “A bad science fiction movie,” he said. “They were inundating me, and one landed on me. It was like a small blackbird. I told my wife, ‘Gosh, look at the size of this thing.’ I told her that I guess I’m going to have to use a shotgun on these things if they get any bigger.” http://www.fayobserver.com/news/20180926/a-bad-science-fiction-movie-florence-breeds-mosquitoes "The Gallinipper is a mosquito as big as a hawk. The sting it carries on its head could slice all the way through a man's arm. A bite from the Gallinipper could mean death. The mosquito could drain all the blood from a man in a single gulp." https://northcarolinaghosts.com/coast/gallinipper/

A Woman's Voice

A Woman's Voice I've been through enough struggles with death and illness to know that the outcomes are not always a matter of the quality of care and attention one receives. The end to this story might not have been any different, had Becky been listened to. But there is an answer to the rhetorical question posed. Becky's struggle would have been better, HAD SHE BEEN LISTENED TO. Not different, necessarily, but better. We all deserve to be listened to, especially when we are openly and directly sharing our worries and concerns, looking for solutions. Too, too often, Women (and all the other other folk oppressed by the White Cis Straight Male Patriarchy) are not listened to. That's a huge, systemic problem. Listen. Demand that others listen, too. In some ways, it won't change outcomes. In others, it will, in ways that will change the world for the better. https://www.thecut.com/2018/09/what-if-the-doctors-had-listened-to-our-sister-becky.html

Ka Boom!

Ka Boom! Higher Yield Than Expected. Originally shared by Kam-Yung Soh Unexpected magnetic fireworks. "During 40 microseconds last April, Shojiro Takeyama and his team at the University of Tokyo dumped 3.2 megajoules of energy into a newly built scientific instrument and blew part of it to smithereens. The smithereens part was expected; the force of the explosion, not quite. The instrument was designed to generate super-strong magnetic fields for examining semiconductors and other materials at the nanometer scale. Takeyama was expecting about 700 Tesla. He got 1200 T instead—a world record for indoor fields and about 400 times as strong as a typical medical MRI. Bigger magnetic fields have been made before, but they aren’t practical or reliably reproducible, because they rely on rather dangerous amounts of TNT. It is not an indoor activity. These fields are generated by starting with a strong, unchanging magnetic field and then rapidly—on the order of microseconds—squeezing it. I...

If you live in China, the government has a firewall around the internet connections in and out of the country. There are now all sorts of laws about your data in China, but the important bit for our story here is this: If you are in China and try to search for a term like ‘democracy’ on the web, there is a series of technological controls that will stop you. Dead Reckoning

Dead Reckoning I think that Pierce might be projecting a bit, calling this a Council of War, but there may be some truth in it. But Military Leadership does what it knows (War) and it is always fighting the Last War. McCain came to see more clearly what went wrong in Vietnam, and to forgive many people, including himself. Still, it didn't seem help inform his decision making about participation in other conflicts. Colin Powell also seemed to learn from Vietnam, but not enough to keep from being hornswoggled by WMD and Adventures in Nation Building. We tend to respect good military leadership, because being able to effectively lead folks into the terrifying mortification of battle is no small thing. But there are limits to that, aren't there? If your enemy succeeds through genocide, chemical/biological weapons, assassination? Do you win by being more genocidal? Some kinds of conflict are a trap. I think that a lot of the difficulties we're facing are born of fear, and ...

People have often given me the feedback about myself that they say you know, you're sincere. And I say, yeah, I guess. I guess what's made me sincere is the fact that I had a lot of experiences. I left and enlisted in the Army wanting to have experience. And I wanted to experience life. And life's, life's hit me pretty hard. I've had some experiences.
